Took the pictures of Grommet, in the snow, a couple weeks ago. The Suji photos I took today, Jan. 9th. She's already getting a little pouch. Which, is really good, cuzzzzzzzzz we need lots and lots of puppies!!!
My Grommet won't be four years old until April. He'll still get bigger in the chest, neck and head.
Suji was born 08/08/08 so she has some fillin' out to do yet too.
Brian and his gang, down in Memphis, are waiting for a male and a female. Brian, from Minnesota, gets to pick his girl first. Deposit 01/13/2012
Here's fatty with TEN DAYS TO GO!!!
This weekend I'll start having her in the house at night. We don't want any babies born outside in this cold weather.
BABIES ARE HERE!!! Born February 22, 2012. Two days early. Everybody is happy and healthy. We've got three girls and two boys. Thank the Lord for an easy, and fairly quick, delivery!!!
While spending hours staring at Suji and the babies I decided to nickname them after the "Flintstones". One of my favorite shows as a kid.
"...meet the Flintstones..."
First Born; 3:16 a.m. GIRL - "Wilma"
Came out butt first complaining. She was all black but seems to be the lightest of all the pups now. Possibly a fawn like her daddy. I can already see alpha. Believe it or not. :) She's got a tiny white spot on her chest and white toes in the rear. I think a couple of her right front toes may have a touch of white. There's a tiny, tiny, white tip on her tail.
Second Born; 3:53 a.m. GIRL - "Betty"
Butt first seems to be the trend. This baby girl has the most white. She has white knee socks in the front and a white rear foot. The left rear has white toes. She's got the most white on the tip of her tail too. There's a long white stripe running the length of her tummy and she has a splash of white on the back of her neck. Probably the most like her mother.
Third Born; 5:40 a.m. BOY - "Dino"
This guy also has a long white stripe runnin' down his tummy. Pretty sure he was butt first too. He has a tiny white tip on his tail. White toes in the back and a coupla' white toes in the front. I'm going to have to tell these guys apart by the tips of their tails! He's the longest puppy.
Fourth Born; 5:50 a.m. GIRL - "Pebbles"
Pebbles is the smallest I think. I'll weigh them tomorrow. They're all pretty close. She has a triangle of white on her chest and a tiny, tiny, white tip on her tail. She has a little white on her front toes and all white toes in the back.
Fifth Born; 8:01 a.m. BOY - "Bam Bam"
Just so happens that this is the big guy. I think he's the biggest. Had to wait the longest for him too. Big and lazy like his grandpa. He has two white toes on both front feet. A large white tip on his tail, only to be out done by Betty, and all white toes in the back.
That's all we got. Lord's will. I thought she was a little smaller than usual. Not sure why.
I can tell them apart if I can see their tails. :)
You can kinda' see Betty's white spot on the back of her neck.
They all seem really thick. Nice fat feet too.
I'll get more pictures when we've all had a rest. I'll weigh them too. We won't know if we have any long coats for a couple three weeks. We probably won't start pickin' until then.
I can't wait to introduce them to their daddy. Their grandpa used to drop big ol' bones into the whelping box to share with the babies. The bones were usually bigger than the babies, but, it's the thought that counts! :)
All babies are spoken for. We've started a dibs list for Whiskey's first litter. Sorry to those of you who must wait. The Lord's got a reason for it.
I think I have them labeled correctly. I'm sure you can see my dilemma. :) Bam Bam and Betty have the big white tips on their tails. Pebbles and Wilma have maybe one or two white hairs on their tails. Dino is right in between. So, if I can see their tails... Once I can see the ends of their tails then I can tell Wilma from Pebbles cuz Wilma is more brown. Pebbles is still black. I can tell Bam Bam from Betty for a lotta' reasons. Betty's white spot on the back of her neck and all her really white feet. Dino, he's the long guy and usually identified through the process of elimination. :) I didn't have time today. I'll try to weigh them tomorrow. They're all right around a pound. Nice fat babies.
I think Bam Bam is still the biggest followed by Wilma. Wilma is still the loudest. Course, Betty likes to complain too.
I haven't had a chance to weigh them yet. Plus, their mother tries to control the whole situation. If I'm kissin' somebody she has to have her nose right there.
She's a really good mama and all our tummies are extremely FAT. Just look at Pebbles in the photo above. :)
You can see the little dot on Wilma's chest in that large photo below. She's got that tiny dot and a little white on her toes. I think she has the least amount of white. Still the lightest.
Everybody else is staying rather black. They could stay black or go brindle. Too early to tell. You can compare to the previous litters. I don't think anybody ever stays all black. They go Macky colored.
Betty getting her butt cleaned.
Pebbles getting her butt cleaned.
Okay, I weighed them yesterday. They were a week old. TANKS already!!!
Bam Bam is the big guy weighing in at almost 3 1/4 pounds.
Wilma comes next at roughly 3 pounds.
Then Betty and Pebbles and Dino are all about 2 3/4 pounds.
They've almost tripled their weight since birth. I know they all weighed about a pound when they were born. It's hard to weigh them. Their mother has to have her nose in there. By next week I'll be able to put her outside for short periods of time. She'd have a hissy fit if I tried that now.
I'll start feeding the little tanks next week. Puppy slop. I think I'm going to mix "Wellness" puppy with "Purina Puppy Chow". Their mother likes the "Purina" better than "Iams" puppy. I may mix all three. I've always used strictly "Purina Puppy Chow" but I'm thinking variety will help strengthen their little constitutions. :)
I'll have to see how they handle it.
Once they start eating puppy food they'll all even out on their weight. Right now Bam Bam pushes everybody aside. Wilma is kinda' pushy too.
Super precious! They still don't have their eyes open but they seem more aware of me. Teething big time. They love to gum your fingers.
Today we're getting our first de-worming. Just a precaution but I'll de-worm them every two weeks until they leave for their new homes. I think I'll start feeding them puppy slop in the next day or two also.
Eyes are opening and we're starting to be real people now. Soooooo adorable!!!
Daddy Grommet. Small animal aggressive? hehe He's got a chewy in his hands, his black sock toy, his white sock toy and another chewy behind him. He used to worry that the kitties would take his stuff. Guess he's over that. And, apparently, there's something special buried in the back yard. Unless the kitty put that dirt on his nose. ??? Gotta' blame somebody!
Anybody wanna' come and visit the next couple weeks are the cutest!
Our first chow day!!! Boy are we a mess. As usual, I didn't have to tell them twice. Actually, it did take a couple nose dunkings to get the point across. But, as you can see, they all caught right on. Now the smaller pups will catch up to the bigger ones. No more fighting over chow.
Most of us don't even bother to stand up.
Bam Bam gave up first. His tummy is probably the most full from Mama. He gets the prime spots. :) Just shove everybody out of the way in true Akita fashion.
Betty stuck it out until she just couldn't eat another bite. Don't worry, Mama will clean up the left-overs.
Usually I can get away with using that old frying pan for the first couple weeks. These guys are already too big. Have to get out the heavy artillary.
How many baby tanks does it take to make a frying pan disappear?
Course, standing up is still a bit of a challenge.
I make way too much puppy slop on purpose. It's good for Mama. She gets hard/dry puppy food while she's pregnant and during nursing but for some reason the slop is soooooooo much better.
I took 22 pictures and this is all we got. I took a couple of each baby.
Dad is supervising. He towers over the gate but wouldn't think of passing.
The lack of cooperation begins.
Bam Bam still hoggin' the chow. Too busy for a "Kodak moment" too.
Everybody has stayed about the same color. Still don't know if anybody is going brindle. Bam Bam's coat seems a little long compared to the others??? Peddles is still the darkest. Wilma is still the most brown.
Brian, Kaye, Lucas and Hannah are comin' this weekend to pick their girl. If it's nice out maybe we'll take the kids outside.
They chose Wilma. Her new name is Anouk.
Brian took these photos. You can tell he has a nicer camera/phone... Thanks tons Brian!
They thought Hannah would pick her puppy but she was more interested in making sure they all had their kibble.
Hey Brian, I thought you were going to label these for me??? Not so easy is it? hehehe
Our first trip outside. To my surprise Pebbles and Dino were the most brave. Big ol' Bam Bam ran right to gamma'.
^ This guy is really happy go lucky. That leaf was just stuck there and he was just walkin' around with it. Didn't care.
Funny, they all pooped as soon as they got outside. Call of the wild?
They chose Betty. Her new name is Nala.
They win Pebbles. Her new name is Luna.
03/24/2011 Babies are
4 1/2 weeks old.
Grandpa Pete helped me today.
Bam Bam does have eyes. Pete was just holdin' him up kinda' high.
They chose Dino. His new name is Kona.
03/28/2011 Babies are 5 weeks old today!!!
These first pictures I took a couple days ago.
Out of the fire and into the frying pan!!!
They're getting so big they over take their mama.
< That's Wilma on top and Betty Boop havin' lunch.
Took another trip outside today. Bam Bam eats rocks. See the dirt on his nose in the photo below?
This baby is livin' with Jackson. Jackson's grandma and grandpa used to have Goof/Haru from Grommet's mom and dad's 2003 litter. They named him Osaka.
