January 17th today. ELEVEN more days. She's whelped five days early, twice!
I'll bring her in the house next week. Hopefully it's not too warm in here for her.
Whiskey's early again. She might have had them yesterday but the Doodles running around the house probably made her nervous.
4:15 p.m. GIRL She has a beautiful head. She's black and she has a white tip on her tail. She's got a white sock on her right front foot and white toes on the rest. She's very square and very healthy. She also has a big white triangle on her chest.
5:18 p.m. GIRL This baby is also dark but not as dark as her older sister. She already has our famous skunk stripe down her back. We'll be able to tell her apart. She has a tiny white tip on her tail and a long white stripe from her chest down her tummy. She has matching white toes all the way around.
7:33 p.m. BOY Surprise! Another black baby with white toes all around. He has a tiny white tip on his tail. He's BIG. He has a white chin and a tiny bit of white above his nose.
7:55 p.m. BOY WHITE What more can I say. Except, he's even bigger than his older brother. Big thick neck and nice head.
8:38 p.m. BOY WHITE Another nice healthy boy!
10:30 p.m. BOY This guy looks just like his mama. He's got a white muzzle and a white lightning bolt on the back of his neck. He'll be easy to tell from the others also. He's got a white ankle sock on the front left and the other three feet are white. He's also got a big white tip on his tail.
10:38 p.m. GIRL She came flyin' out only 8 minutes after her brother. She's got four matching feet with all white toes. She's got the most white on the tip of her tail and squirrelly white markings on her chest.
11:42 p.m. BOY WHITE Good luck telling these guys apart. Except one has a weird part down the middle of his head. Their grandpa had a weird colic kinda' punk rock thing goin' on. ???
It's going to take me a while to figure out who's who. We haven't come up with nicknames yet either.
01/30/2015 Babies are going to be a week old tomorrow.
Well, the babies are growing like little weeds. Everybody is healthy and happy! So's Mom.
We decided to go with the "Brady Bunch" theme for nicknames. We have too many boys so we're using "Mike" the dad and "Sam", who was "Alice's" boyfriend. Remember? Sam the butcher.
I don't trust their mother so she is only with them to feed them. At least until they're past the squishable stage. So, every 2-3 hours, I have to go sit in there and supervise. 24/7.
Which means, I've already got them all nicknamed and figured out. I can't tell the white boys apart except one is a little bigger. I'll get to know them by their personalities. That's going to take more time. But, they'll be "Greg", "Peter" and "Bobbie".
The guy with the white on his back, #6, is "Sam". I've been calling him, "Sam I am". I don't know what color he'll be. Have to go look at the previous litters. "Mike" is the other guy. I'm pretty sure he's going to be a red like his mother. He and "Cindy" look just alike.
"Cindy" was born #2 but she's the smallest, hence her nickname. I guess "Alice" kinda' looks like them too. Alice was born 7th. I don't wanna' use "Jan" cuz that's my name. Might be showing favoritism. :) "Marsha" was the 1st born, hence her nickname. Perfect!
Marsha is the darkest and the biggest of the girls. Sam is pretty black too. Mike was the biggest until the white boys were born. At least two of them are bigger. They all seem very calm and very head strong. Akitas already. :) I try to give the littler ones the best spots and everybody fights me the whole way.
I was keeping them in a laundry basket, under a heat lamp, but they out grew the basket. Didn't take long. That prevented them from wandering away from the pack and being all alone. They're in a 4' x 4' cage/whelping box.
It's nice because their mother can be in the same room but can't get at um'.
I'll start labeling them from now on. These pictures turned out too dark and I can't remember who was where.
Mike and Cindy have our black skunk stripes down their backs.
02/03/2015 Babies are a week and a half old now.
The white boys are in a lot of these photos, just can't see um'!
They are really starting to get big. Mike is so fat I put him a couple feet away from his mother so he gets some exercise.
You'll have to bear with me. I've done 23 tax returns since these guys were born. That's not to mention the year end and quarterly reports for all my clients. W-2's, 1099's, 941's...
But, what better a distraction... Look at these little angels. I still go in there every 3-4 hours and let mama feed them. I've been slippin' a little at night to 5 hours. From the looks of their tummies we're doing a good job!
I'm starting to be able to tell the white boys apart. One is really white and fluffy. Might be a long coat??? One has an orange tint to him. That could be stain from birth or the red coming through. The white are actually a diluted red. We'll have to wait and see. Sam could be a long coat. Seems the ones colored like him usually are.
You can see, in the one picture above, their little pink noses are already starting to turn black. Standard says noses can be black or liver on the white babies.
I'll probably try to start them on soggy "Purina Puppy Chow" by the end of the week. See if we can help mama out a bit. She looks great and is doing a very good job. She's exceptional at keeping them clean.
I'll also de-worm them for the first time at 2 weeks. I'll continue de-worming, every two weeks, until they leave.
The white guys are really starting to look like polar bears. TOOO CUTE!!!
02/07/2015 Babies were two weeks old yesterday!
They got de-wormed for the first time yesterday. No sign of any worms. We do that just as a precaution. I'll de-worm again at 4 weeks and 6 weeks and 8 weeks if they're still here.
#4 First white boy, nickname = Greg
#4 First white boy, nickname = Greg
I can pretty much tell the white boys apart now. #4, Greg, has an orange tint to the top of his head and back of his neck. He's got this goofy part down the middle of his head which is really white.
Greg is the biggest and about twice the size of sister Cindy.
All three of the white boys are huge. #8, Bobbie, is the same size but he's not quite as heavy. I'll have to weigh them one of these days
I'm going to attempt to feed them "Purina" puppy chow slop tomorrow for the first time. Give their mama a little break. I'm still supervising every feeding. The boys are probably too big for their mother to squish now but I'm not so sure about Alice and Cindy. Few more days of interrupted sleep and we should be good to go!!!
Marsha is the darkest still. Sam was pretty black and still is on his back but he's lightening up a little on his neck.
You can go to Whiskey's last couple of litters and see who was what color at this age and then see what they look like now.
02/10/2015 Babies are 17 days old.
Sooooo, puppy slop went over fairly well.
Pretty sure there was more on um' than in um'!
Some of us aren't impressed. I told um', "You may not appreciate me now but, you'll see, in two weeks I'll be your favorite person in the whole world."
Hope I've got the right nickname on the right kid!
This little guy is going to live with Devin and Allison in Redwing, MN. They're comin' to visit this weekend. Deposit 02/14/2015.
02/15/2015 Babies were three weeks old yesterday. Eyes open and cruisin' all over the place.
You can see the progression. And, watch a giant pan disappear. It's magic. :) Really messy magic. :)
The white boys will start turning gray now that they're living on newspaper. They got BIG so fast. I think I'm going to have to do puppy slop twice a day.
There is still one girl available but we don't know which one yet. And, two white boys still need a new family. We think Peter is going with Bob but we have to wait and see who's a long coat. Can't tell for sure yet.
They all seem very calm. Course, I just had a litter of bouncing baby Labradoodles and they're WILD! Cindy and Bobbie complain a little but they're the babies and that's expected.
Mikey's new family came to meet him. They haven't picked out a new name yet.
You can see Ellie over there with her new best friend. Sam's new name is Kisume. Pretty cool meeting your new pal when he's this little. Bonding already. They were very thoughtful and brought me newspaper and flowers for Valentine's Day. :) THANK YOU GUYS!!!
Mama is lookin' pretty good. The little giants are starting to drain her a little. She's been getting all kinds of good stuff and I'll start feeding twice.
02/17/2015 Babies are about 3 1/2 weeks old.
Their mother doesn't wanna' lay down for them any longer. Mean, mean mama!
< Not sure who won the battle? Pete or the puppy chow?!?!
Cindy and Alice are kinda' hard to tell apart except Alice has white feet and Cindy has white toes. The white tip on Alice's tail is much bigger too.
They went from little blobs to little "Flash Gordons". I took 30 pictures and got about 8. Pretty obvious my camera isn't good at action shots.
I'm still not sure who are long coats. The longest coats are Sam, Greg and Cindy. Pretty sure Mike and Alice have regular coats. Marsha too.
They know me now. That's precious. Some are actually coming to my voice. Last night everybody was complaining. They're normally a very quiet gang. Turns out they don't want the heat lamp any more. I turned it off and they all went to sleep. They're really exceptionally good babies.
I think they're eating more than any litter I've ever had. I don't remember ever making so much and having to use a bowl to heat the water to make the slop. I've ALWAYS used a cup!
I'll de-worm them again on Saturday but I'm pretty sure that's alllll puppy.
02/22/2015 Babies are four weeks old!!! Boy did that go by fast.
Their mother thinks she's about through with this gang. That's mostly all they get now. She doesn't bother to lay down anymore.
Chewin' on the little girl's boot!
This not so little guy is going to live with Tim and Bobby Jo up in Ellsworth, WI. Deposit 03/07/2015.
Pete's new name = Iorek (your-eck) He's moving to St. Charles, IL with Damen, his new best friend.
This little girl is going to live in Chicago, IL. with Moises and his family. New name = Bella but I have to double check that. :)
This little girl is going to live with Devin and Allison too. And brother Mike/Thorin of course. New name = I forgot I'll have to ask again. :)
